Wine has been a favourite amongst people for many years. Not just for women, it is a drink for men too. From men like Caesar to Franklin, everyone has been enjoying wine, so this drink can be as manly as whiskey.
Luckily, we can pop to the shop and pick up a bottle of our preferred wine whenever we fancy. Therefore, we should be grateful for the people that put time into perfecting the taste. It takes a lot of planning and preparation to produce the best quality wine. Right from the harvesting of the grapes in the perfect region, everything must be well thought through.
The process for making wine can differ largely with different techniques, technology and various other factors changing. However, there are a few key steps needed in the making of wine, starting from the grapes to serving it in the form of wine. Here are the basic steps;
CHOOSE THE GRAPES
In the sunshine, berries grow on vines and are initially green in colour (known as ‘white’ grapes). As they grow in size, they eventually turn red.
Once grown, the grape bunches are cut from the tree using shears or with the help of machinery. The grapes are always harvested during morning or at night to avoid high sugar level and heat.
The grapes are accumulated so they can be crushed in the crushing machinery. Here, the grapes get transformed into the juices to further convert them into wine. In this step, grapes are not separated from the stems, leaves and sticks. They are removed later.
CRUSH THE GRAPES
The stems are now detached from the grapes with the help of a destemmer which chops off the stems and squeezes the grapes.
In the case of white wine, the white grapes are compressed after separating their skins to draw out the juice. The pure juice that is obtained is then moved to the tank where sediments settle down.
Thereafter, the juice is taken into another container to see if there are any more sediments left before the process of fermentation.
The only difference between the red and the white wine is that in the case of red wine, even the skin of the grapes is compressed which gives the wine its red colour.
FERMENTING THE GRAPES
Fermentation is the process of converting sugar into alcohol. Initially, yeast is added to red as well as the white grapes juice so that the process of fermentation can start.
When red wine is fermented, carbon dioxide is released. It is important to ensure that the skins are in contact with the wine. Once it happens, the wines are then allowed to age for a few months.
AGEING THE WINE
There are several factors which determine the flavours and intensity of the wine.
It depends on whether a wine is aged for a few months or a few years and if it is aged in stainless steel or oak barrel. There is also a difference if the barrel is a neutral one or a used one, if it passes by various stages of toasted barrels, and if the oak barrel is an American oak barrel or French oak barrel.
BOTTLING THE WINE
Once the wines are allowed to age for a good period of time, it is bottled in the proper manner for the consumers to drink it.
White wines are required to age for a few months and red wines require around 18-24 months before bottling.
